Seven Ways To Be A Better Parent

Teach Children How to Read

The responsibilities of a parent are vast and often riddled with difficulty, especially when it comes time to guiding your child away from negative behavior and bad habits and down the right path. The decisions you make now will impact your child for the rest of their life, so it’s of the utmost importance that you make thoughtful and intelligent choices.

1. Understand that children deserve not to be hit. A long time ago, hitting was an acceptable and common practice among parents, and experts are now demonstrating how harmful that can be to a developing child’s psyche. Children who are hit or constantly corrected and made to feel unworthy grow up to be anxious, self-doubting and challenged in relationships and life in general. There are many other parenting methods that will work for you without traumatizing your child.

2. Avoid giving in to your child. Just one incident of you throwing in the towel and surrendering to that adorable face or incessant pleading and your child learns the power of manipulation. Once they understand that no doesn’t always mean no, you will face battle after impossible battle. Stand your ground always and be firm in enforcing your decisions, lest your authority be undermined at every turn.

3. Be as patient as possible. No matter how many times you repeat yourself, your child may continue with a certain behavior or persist at doing things his own way. Frustration abounds for parents and it’s just too easy to get mad and exert your authority; having patience sets a good example and instills more dignity into the learning process.

4. Make eye contact during discipline. Knowing that you mean what you say will reinforce the ordeal and get your point across more effectively. It also demonstrates that your words are specific to your child and not random to your mood or other circumstances. The more successful your disciplinary sessions are, the less of them you should need.

5. Have realistic expectations. Knowing your child’s true limitation is extremely helpful to helping them reach potential; however, setting the bar too high or pushing them can lead to failure and resentment. Encourage accomplishments and foster growth through caring guidance and don’t put too much pressure on them to perform.

6. Do things together. Spending quality time with your child will strengthen the bond between you and open doors to communication and understanding. Engage in activities that show you relate to them and that what’s important to them matters to you. Allow them to chose what to do sometimes and where to go.

7. Let them know they are loved. No matter what you go through together or how angry you may become, letting them know how much you love them is crucial. Kids will disappoint sometimes, and they are well aware of this; make sure to emphasize that it’s temporary and doesn’t change your love for them.

Use the above advice to have a better perspective on parenting and to facilitate your education. Becoming the best parent you can be is vital to raising healthy and happy people that know how to get on in life.
